RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens to be Announced in Early 2024 !
New reports indicate Canon will release an updated RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lens with an internal zoom in 2024.
Yesterday, we shared information from anonymous sources suggesting Canon would launch a version II of an existing RF lens next year. While the specific lens was uncertain, the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L was considered a likely candidate.
Additional insider information received since then consistently points to a revamped 70-200mm f/2.8L coming in 2024. The new lens will feature an internal zoom, unlike the original RF version.
Many Canon sports photographers have continued using older EF 70-200mm models with adapters, preferring their internal zoom design. Sources say the current RF 70-200mm is seen as unbalanced and inconsistent in feel, with cramped ring placement.
An internally zooming RF 70-200mm f/2.8L would provide desired handling for this key user base. It’s unclear whether this would be a marked “version II” or simply a new offering in the RF lineup. The original collapsible design remains popular for its portability.
While Canon shooters also await other unreleased lenses, insiders expect numerous new RF optics will be announced in the next six months. An internal zoom 70-200mm f/2.8L is likely one of them.
The new design would also drive teleconverter sales. We feel confident Canon will deliver this in 2024 based on multiple reliable sources. Other awaited lenses should still arrive later this year or early next.
