Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L II USM Lens Rumors

Canon is reportedly working on a sequel to their impressive but heavy RF 28-70mm f/2L USM zoom lens, according to recent rumors from CR. The original “look what we can do” lens stunned photographers with its ultra-wide f/2 constant aperture across a standard zoom range. However, the image quality came at the cost of significant weight.

Sources claim the Mark II version of the RF 28-70mm f/2L will deliver even better optical performance in a body that is notably lighter. Reduced weight would be a welcome improvement for many photographers interested in this lens. Exact details on how Canon plans to shed weight while maintaining image quality are unknown at this time.

Don’t expect image stabilization in the updated 28-70, as including that would likely prevent substantial weight reduction. Fortunately, Canon’s in-body image stabilization works very effectively with this lens already.

While the timeline for release remains vague, Canon shooters looking for top-tier fast zoom performance may not have too long to wait. If the reports of this Mark II update are true, Canon plans to refresh other early RF mount lenses with advanced designs as well. We may see similar modernized takes on favorites like the popular RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM in the coming year or two.

For now Canon users will have to wait eagerly for more updates on successors to these mammoth lenses. But the prospect of lighter weight and even better resolution and correction is an exciting one indeed. The original shoots impressively well already, so expectations will be high for the next generation.
