Rumors: Both Canon EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II will be Announced in July

Canon EOS R1 is now expected to be officially announced in mid-July 2024, according to recent reports from Canon Rumors. The announcement is set to coincide with the unveiling of the Canon EOS R5 Mark II, a successor to the popular EOS R5 model.

The development of the EOS R1 was first announced by Canon on May 15, 2024, generating significant excitement among photography enthusiasts and professionals alike. Many had hoped that Canon would follow a similar approach to the EOS R3 launch, gradually revealing new information leading up to the official announcement. However, since the development announcement, the only glimpses of the EOS R1 have been images of it being used at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Canon Rumors has received confirmations from various retailers worldwide regarding the timing of new product NDAs (non-disclosure agreements) coming into effect. Typically, major product announcements follow a week or two after these NDAs are implemented. This process allows retailers to assess their initial order requirements and gives Canon’s distribution network time to allocate stock to each retailer or third-party distributor. It’s important to note that a retailer’s order quantity does not necessarily reflect the number of units they will receive in the initial shipment.

While the EOS R5 Mark II is expected to start shipping in the second half of August 2024, the release date for the EOS R1 remains somewhat uncertain. Canon Rumors had previously reported that the EOS R1 might not be available until November 2024 at the earliest, suggesting a potential four-month gap between the official announcement and retail availability. This delay is plausible, as high-end Canon bodies like the EOS R1 are often prioritized for distribution to news agencies and Canon Professional Services (CPS) members first.

From a retail perspective, the EOS R5 Mark II is likely to be more significant than the EOS R1. Retail managers interviewed by Canon Rumors have indicated that the sales ratio between the EOS R5 and EOS R3 has been approximately 30 to 1 in favor of the EOS R5. This ratio is consistent with the sales patterns observed during the DSLR era when comparing the 5D series and EOS-1 series. However, it’s worth noting that some retailers may experience ratios that deviate from this 30-to-1 average.

In recent years, announcement and availability dates for new camera gear have often been subject to last-minute changes. Nevertheless, Canon Rumors expresses confidence in the reported timelines for the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II, citing multiple factors that support their predictions.

In addition to the anticipated camera announcements, Canon is also expected to unveil several interesting lenses in the near future. Canon Rumors plans to provide more information on these lenses later in the week.

The impending release of the Canon EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II has generated significant buzz within the photography community. As Canon’s flagship mirrorless camera, the EOS R1 is expected to push the boundaries of imaging technology and deliver unparalleled performance. Meanwhile, the EOS R5 Mark II aims to build upon the success of its predecessor, offering enhanced features and capabilities to satisfy the needs of professional and enthusiast photographers alike.

As the official announcement date draws closer, photographers eagerly await further details about the specifications, pricing, and availability of these highly anticipated cameras. With Canon’s reputation for delivering top-quality imaging products, the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II are poised to make a significant impact on the mirrorless camera market and reshape the landscape of professional photography.
