Sigma has Announced 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Canon RF APS-C Cameras
Sigma has unveiled its new 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN | Contemporary lens for Canon’s APS-C RF-mount cameras, expanding options for Canon mirrorless users. Set to launch in mid-July 2024, the lens will retail for $599, a $50 increase over versions for other mounts like Sony E, Fujifilm X, and Nikon Z. You can now pre-order at B&H Photo Video/Adorama.
Designed for APS-C sensors, this lens offers a full-frame equivalent focal range of 28.8-80mm with a constant f/2.8 aperture. Sigma describes it as an “exceptionally light, bright, and sharp standard zoom,” ideal for various photography styles.
The Canon RF version measures 69 x 75mm and weighs 300g, slightly larger than its Sony E-mount counterpart. Despite this, it remains compact and lightweight for its class, especially considering the constant f/2.8 aperture.
Sigma has optimized the lens for the RF-mount, developing a specific control algorithm for improved AF drive and communication speed. It supports Canon’s Servo AF and in-camera aberration correction. The mount is rubber-sealed for durability in various conditions.
Notably, the lens is part of Sigma’s mount conversion program, allowing owners of other mount versions to modify their lenses for RF-mount use. This feature could be particularly beneficial for photographers transitioning to the Canon RF system.
Key features include superior image quality, versatile zoom range, and impressive close-focusing capabilities, with a minimum focusing distance of 12.1cm and maximum magnification of 1:2.8.
This release represents a significant addition to the Canon RF ecosystem, providing users with a high-quality, versatile zoom option from a renowned third-party manufacturer.
