Canon EOS R1 & EOS R5 Mark II Release Date in Q3 or Q4 of 2024
Canon’s hotly anticipated camera launches, the EOS R5 Mark II and EOS R1, are scheduled to be announced in late April or early May. However, the cameras won’t be available for purchase by consumers until after two major sporting events this summer.
The plan is to “announce” the new models in the coming weeks, and then provide them to photographers covering the Euro 2024 football championship in June and the Summer Olympic Games in July. This follows the strategy Canon used with the EOS R3, first putting it in the hands of working pros at big events to generate buzz.
While the announcement will happen soon, widespread retail availability likely won’t come until late Q3 or even Q4 2024, after the Euro 2024 and Olympics have concluded.
The high-end EOS R1 is currently undergoing testing with a select group of photographers that Canon traditionally uses for camera evaluations. This has been confirmed by multiple sources, indicating an advanced stage of development.
Photographers are eager for more details on the R5 Mark II and R1’s capabilities as launch dates approach. The cameras are expected to push boundaries for Canon’s EOS R mirrorless series.
However, don’t expect any major revelations at the upcoming CP+ tradeshow in February. Sources say Canon will make some non-EOS related announcements there, but specifics can’t be elaborated on at this time. The show likely won’t provide updates on these upcoming camera models.
After a splashy announcement in the next few weeks, all eyes will be on the Euro 2024 and Olympics as photographers put the R5 II and R1 into action for the first time.
