Canon EOS R1 Prototypes Spotted in the Hands of Select Pro Photographers
Rumors are heating up around Canon’s flagship mirrorless camera, the EOS R1. While Canon has not yet made any official announcements, prototypes of the R1 are reportedly being tested by select professional photographers.
Sources say Canon could unveil the R1 sometime in the first quarter of 2024. This would follow a similar timeline to the EOS R3, which was teased months ahead of its launch. It’s likely that Canon wants to get the R1 into real-world shooting scenarios before finalizing the design and announcement.
Details remain scarce on the R1’s specifications at this early stage. However, insiders note that Canon has made impressive advancements to the camera’s autofocus capabilities. Specifically, the iris tracking AF point selection has seen noticeable improvements compared to the R3, which had divided user opinions. As expected, general autofocus performance will also see a boost.
One feature that won’t make it to the R1 is Quad Pixel AF, Canon’s cutting-edge sensor technology. But resolution is rumored to be at least double the R3’s 24 megapixels. This would put the R1 in the 50-60 megapixel range, delivering sizable resolution gains while maintaining speed and performance.
With more chatter leaking out, the R1 seems to be in the home stretch of development. Canon shooters shouldn’t have too much longer to wait until the company’s mirrorless flagship is here. Excitement and anticipation will continue building in the meantime for the R1’s eventual unveiling.
