Canon Interview: EOS R will Also Have Eye-AF via Firmware, EOS R Pro will Take Time !

Imaging-Resource has interviewed with high-level Canon engineering execs during the EOS RP (B&H Photo/Adorama/Amazon) launch. From the interview, Canon said that EOS R will also have Eye-AF feature via firmware update soon; The image sensor in EOS RP is same as in EOS 6D Mark II; the Pro/high-end EOS R body is coming, but will take time when everything right in the body.
Highlights from the interview:
- EOS RP and EOS 6D Mark II has same sensor, except the microlenses are fine-tuned to be more optimized for the mirrorless system.
- EOS RP and EOS R has same DIGIC 8 image processor.
- EOS RP has fewer addressable focus points than the EOS R, but performance should be equal.
- A magnesium inner chassis makes the EOS RP amazingly lightweight.
- EOS RP doesn’t use gaskets for weather-sealing, it has same level as EOS 6D Mark II.
- Six new RF lenses will be released in the second half of 2019, don’t which one will coming first, which one will coming later.
- Canon’s 85mm f/1.2 DS lens uses apodization coatings(!) internally for better bokeh.
- Canon’s apodization coating can be applied to elements of existing lens designs
- The larger R-mount allows image stabilization for wide-angle, standard too, not just teles (RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS, RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS, RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS).
- EOS R will also get Eye-AF via firmware update soon. Eye-AF should make really bright portrait lenses easier to use.
- Pro/High-end EOS R Body will coming, but will take time when everything in body is ready.
- Performance will be key for Canon’s pro mirrorless body, once it arrives.
- EOS RP’s 4K video is limited to 24p and full auto or manual only.
